China Rule of Law Grants Announced by Business-Backed Legal Fund
Washington, December 15 — The US-China Legal Cooperation Fund, a charitable program supported by leading American companies engaged in trade and investment with the People's Republic of China, has announced the latest grants in its continuing program of support for joint US-PRC cooperation in China's legal development. The approved grants provide full or partial support of projects dealing with comparative government information policies, possible reforms of China's trade union federation legislation, China's criminal investigation procedures, implementation of China's new sexual harassment law, legal support for migrant workers, and advanced training in judicial administration for Chinese judges.
The Fund's Trustees, chaired by Herbert J. Hansell of the law firm Jones Day, made the awards from a pool of applications at the Fund's recent semi-annual meeting.
Information on the latest Fund awards follows:
- A project to conduct comparative studies of the US and PRC government information publishing and dissemination policies and procedures sponsored by Washington University School of Law, St. Louis, MO, in cooperation with the National Library of the PRC.
- A study of the lawyer's role in China's criminal investigation procedures in comparison with civil liberties guarantees for defendants in the US criminal justice system culminating in recommendations for reforming the criminal defense process in China. This project is sponsored by the China Legal Reform Research Center of Sichuan University in cooperation with Temple University, Philadelphia, PA.
- A project to initiate and produce an implementing platform for China's newest legal development on sexual harassment in the context of employment proposed by the University of Hawaii School of Law, Honolulu, HI, in cooperation with the Institute of Labor Law and Social Security at Peking University Law School.
- Continuation of a program to provide community outreach and public education for migrant workers in China sponsored by The Council of Overseas Chinese Services, Elmhurst, NY, in cooperation with Guangdong University of Business Studies.
- Continuation of a project sponsored by the East Asian Legal Studies Center at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI, to provide an Advanced Program in Judicial Administration for Chinese judges in cooperation with the Shanghai High People's Court.
- A project to support clinical legal research on possible reforms of the legislative framework and practice of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions proposed by the International Commission for Labor Rights, New York, NY, in cooperation with the Peking University Legal Clinic.
Through its website, www.uschinalegalcoop.org, the US-China Legal Cooperation Fund solicits project proposals from American and Chinese partners planning cooperative efforts in legal education, improvement of legal services, protection of legal rights, legislative and judicial procedure, and related areas.
